The movie theater in Mall San Pedro has half price Wednesday shows, so we took advantage and saw The Revenant/El Renacido last night. It was a pretty full theater for a weeknight, and for a movie that’s been out for a while already. The movie was in English with Spanish subtitles as they usually are, according to Lucia. In the rare case that there were already English subtitles (since there were also Pawnee and Arikara languages) the Spanish subtitles would be at the top of the screen.
Movie promos are also serious business here, and the were LOTS of huge cardboard cutouts. Some were interactive like the angry birds promo with a cutout for your face, or the Zoolander promo with moving parts so you can change Ben Stiller’s head/top/pants with those of Penelope Cruz or Will Ferrell.
The screen was a normal size as were the chairs. They reclined a bit if you leaned into them and you could lift up the armrests too. You can choose your seats when you purchase and we sat down a little after the previews started. Watched one for the upcoming Maze Runner film (I think?) along with Batman/Superman (I am excited for that one!). The “Cinema News” on the bottom right corner was only there for the previews (phew). I was a little startled by the abrupt start of the feature film though. There was no notice or “Feature Film now playing” like I’m used to, it just began as the previews did.
The Revenant was pretty intense. Lucia and I jumped in our seats at scenes where death was surely imminent, and grimaced at all the gnarly means of survival. I know I’m not much of a movie buff and I haven’t seen all the films/roles up for an Oscar, but Leo performed brilliantly in this film, evoking vivid emotions even without much dialogue.
We had to wind down from such a heavy film with some chitter, chatter, and approx. 30 minutes of Ratatouille since it was on the apt. cable (I still need to see the whole thing!).
