Mozartkugel (The Mozart Ball)

Salzburg is most famous for being the birthplace and home of classical music wizard Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, aka the only Mozart you know.

It’s also famous for its chocolate/pistachio/nougat truffle-ball, named after the Salzburg’s most distinguished citizen. Kugel means ball, so it’s the Mozart Ball.

Paul Fürst created the Mozartkugel in 1890, and in 1905 it won a gold medal at a Paris exhibition.

While some Mozartkugel are sold in souvenir shops, Fürst Mozartkugel are exclusive to their 4 locations in Salzburg.

Nowadays, there are Mozartkugel bearing Mozart’s profile all over the city! Trying them can be tasty fun, but there is only one original. The easy-to-remember part is that the creator’s name is Fürst, pronounced similar to “first” and a reminder as to who started the trend.

We had a few and though they varied, if you like sweet nougat-y treats, you’ll likely enjoy them all.

Never knew! Such variation amongst the different Mozartkugels! I think Furst’s looks most basic and maybe a tad less sweet sans the nougat? You’re feeding chocolate dreams if they come in dark chocolate…..mmmmm.
