Sunday in San José

Woke up this morning to the smell of a home-cooked Tican breakfast. (Tico = local slang for Costa Rican) Lucia made us gallopinto (beans and rice mixture), scrambled eggs, and smashed avocado with fresh bread. bfast-col

The view in the morning was even prettier than it was in the night. You can see locals playing fútbol matches (soccer) on 2 adjacent courts.

Lucia took us to downtown San Jose by bus, so we could get acquainted with the routes and see what it’s like. It was similar to the last time I was here, with vendors galore (lots of socks for the upcoming school year and lottery tickets, as always), a few street performers and modern storefronts reminiscent, but inexactly like US brands (EXCESS, instead of EXPRESS, for example), along with your McDonalds, Starbucks, and KFC. I was excited that I recognized a few places we’d seen, eaten at, and visited before (Panaderia Colombiano, el museo de oro, a churro place, and a corner cafe!).

Jon was a moving target to vendors who spoke English. Among the wares they asked him to buy: sunglasses, word searches, and individual mini jellos.

We also went a bit further, to Parque La Sabana. It’s a pretty big park, with a track, small lake, several fútbol fields, playgrounds, and basketball courts. park activities

The variety of activities impressed me. We saw plenty of roller skaters, going around/within the  center of the track. Vendors sold kites, dog clothes (“adidog”), grilled chicken/carne/hot dogs, fresh coconuts, chips/treats, sliced mango, even time in trampolines (500 colones for 15 minutes). They have these awesome trees with rainbow colored bark!park1parklake-col

A few fisherman waited patiently with their lines along the lakes edge while others rented pedal boats to explore the lake from within. The turkey-like ducks are nearly twice the size of mallard ducks I’m used to in the US. They kept wagging their butts! (maybe bathing?)

Seeing all the fresh fruit got to Jon and he had to try some mango! It was $500 colones for a small baggie (~$1USD).

Very fresh, sweet, and crunchy! Note: lime here is orange-looking

The sun sets sorta early around here, around 6ish. Lack of sun didn’t stop people from playing soccer though!sunset-1IMG_0111-1

It sounds like i have to visit Costa Rica.
The churns and fruit as well as the park sounds great for me. I seem similar trees in Maui (road to Hanna)

    • Yes, lots to do and see here, and very friendly and safe =)
