Thanksgiving in Vienna

Happy Thanksgiving to all!

We’re in Vienna, Austria now and surrounded by Christmas decor and Christmas Markets everywhere we look!

But with families with strong Thanksgiving family get-together traditions, we haven’t forgotten about Thanksgiving.

Even though this year there’s no pan con pavo, pupusas, sticky rice, mashed potatoes, or tofurkey, we made do with some Austrian specialties 🙂griechenbeisl

We ate at a famed Vienna restaurant in a building from Middle Ages, 1350 to be exact. The Griechenbeisl restaurant came about as early as 1447 and has since fed the likes of Mark Twain, Johnny Cash, Ludwig Beethoven, and Mozart.

Instead of turkey, I ordered roast goose.

Not turkey, but still a fowl!

It came perched atop a cooked red cabbage/quince with juniper berry sauce and two dumplings which were a fantastic blend of starchy/savory potatoes and sweet seasoned chestnut filling.

Jon got wild boar medallions.

Like ham, fresh and pre-cured.

The boar came with creamy savoy cabbage, potato noodles (those are the long breadstick-looking things), glazed chestnuts, and gravy.

The restaurant is a series of rooms. We were lucky enough to catch a bit of the live zither music playing in the room next door while we ate dessert.

No pie, but a delicate apple strudel works wonders!

There are SO many things to be thankful for, but the most important are family and friends.

Even though we’re miles away, we want you to know we’re thinking of (and missing) all of you <3

Cheers!
